Chicken

Got a call last night from my mum telling me about all the dangers of eating chicken especially in KL right now due to the bird flu scare. After she was done, she asked me whether I've had my dinner yet and I told her I was eating. She asked what was I eating and I had just one word for her ... "Chicken" ... you could hear a pin drop on the other end of the line for 5 seconds. Then, BOOM! she went into an explosive tirade of "Didn't you hear what I just said? etc ..." Well, excuse me, it's not done to spite her ... just so happens that the kitchen is out of gas, I didn't know there was a bird-flu scare nearby coz I don't watch the news and I couldn't find cooked fish in the grocery store. Besides, I've always had chicken. Oh, well. Luckily when you're in KL talking on the phone with your mum in Kuching, you can be suddenly "worried" about their telephone bill. Needless to say, I got off that sinking ship fast. Pity my brothers around her though. She must have nagged them with all the unspoken things she was about to nag me with. Great invention this; the handphone. "Sorry mum, my battery's low", "Expensive lah talk so long", "I wanna take bath" etc are just some of the many excuses I use to get out of uncomfortable situations with my mum. She's even starting to ask me about guys that I know and whether I'm dating or not. Eeuuww. It's a little weird to be sharing relationship details with mums; especially your own. Don't get me wrong. I'm all for the "let's be friends" concept with my mum but there are taboo areas that can only be shared (but usually I don't) with EXTREMELY close and tight-lipped friends. I know she's worried that she doesn't know much about me with my being far and all but that's just life. Children grow up and change from the helpless tiny weenie babies that depend on mum to independent career women that don't need anyone. I guess she's worried that I'm not as close to her as I was when I was around but I have to keep telling her I'm not going anywhere and she's stuck with me for a long time yet; no matter how aloof or secretive I seem. Moms worry a lot, don't they? But all is well when I remember to say: "I love you too, Mum" and she stops nagging. Love ... the miracle word that calms ragged emotions. Or maybe my mum is just a big softie? Of course her former patients will disagree whole-heartedly with me coz her hard-nosed reputation is well-known and well-deserved but they're not the ones loved by her now are they? My mum: cold-stone wall to others, but warm, jello-like mush with her naughty kids. Hehe. Ooohh, if she ever reads this blog, I'm so gonna get a clobbering on my head but then will get kissed anyway to take the pain away. What I tell you ... my mum the softie ... ;p
